Nico Robin and Suicide Ideation

Posted by: malymin

"I Need to Talk About Nico Robin or I Will Lose My Goddamn Mind" by tyrantisterror

In high school, one of the parts of my life where my suicidal ideation was at its strongest, I was told on a couple of occasions by people that they admired how confident I was in my sense of self, and how honest and genuine I seemed to be. It was baffling every time, because I lived in my brain, where I knew for a fact I had no confidence whatsoever and hid as many of my feelings as possible. What they saw as confidence was just… apathy, a disinterest in how people reacted to the mask I’d composed of the few feelings and thoughts I felt were shallow enough to express without fear. I got exceptionally good at hiding the toxic mess of self-hatred I had festering inside my brain.

I truly believe there is no greater suffering that can be inflicted on a person than this kind of self-destructive despair, because once it takes root in you, it never leaves. It is an enemy you will grapple with your entire life, never fully relenting no matter how hard you struggle against it. It never, ever fucking leaves, and anyone who actually gets to know you will know this in time, and you’ll always wonder when they’ll get sick of dealing with it and abandon you like you deserve to be abandoned.

I bring all this personal shit up because Nico Robin’s story is about suicidal ideation, about self-loathing, about despair. And, in the nature of melodrama, of emotional truth, it takes what it feels like to hate yourself to this extreme and makes it literal. Suicidal ideation makes you feel like the World hates you, like your existence is a crime. For Nico Robin, that is literally true - the World Government wants her dead, and her existence is literally a crime in its eyes.

This is just one meta, but it's one that I liked enough I want to highlight it with a quote from the introduction section. I've never watched or read One Piece, but maybe one day I should... even with how excruciatingly long it is. It's hard for me to come by an honest, earnest character manifesto in this day and age, and this is a good one.

Side recommendation: Tyrantisterror also wrote some meta pointing out that Mina Murray is effectively the true protagonist of Dracula on their website back in 2017, four years before Dracula Daily created a big burst of Dracula (1897 novel) fandom popping out meta and re-assessing the characters' original depictions vs their flanderization by adaptations and pop culture. There's other interesting articles by them on Horror Flora (largely focusing on fantasy, horror, and kaiju media), but the Mina one is perhaps my favorite.

A short one from Tumblr, on the subject of "headcanon"

the term headcanon can be useful to describe a very specific phenomenon but is largely conflated with simply reading or interpreting the text in a way that leads to some degree of extrapolation. gonna use dungeon meshi as an example (i first tried using hamlet because i figured it’s more universal but as it turns out i have way too much of a stake in shakespeare scholarship and we don’t need this post to be a million words long). “kabru would be a psych major” is technically a headcanon, but it’s also one that is grounded in the text as it relates to kabru’s fascination with human behavior and their psychopathologies. “falin would listen to joanna newsom,” on the other hand, is not in any way grounded in the text (that i know of), but rather something i nonetheless believe because she has good vibes: it is a headcanon. “marcille is in love with falin,” however, is not a headcanon, but rather a coherent interpretation of what is explicitly depicted in the narrative. sure, there is enough plausible deniability that you could argue “they’re just really good friends who have a deep, sisterly bond,” but that is also a reading. do you see the difference. if something is not explicit in the text but nonetheless can be extrapolated from direct textual evidence, calling it a “headcanon” rather than an interpretation, reading, or even extrapolation, is actually just reductive. i’m sick of making posts that directly cite multiple textual examples to ground my claims being tagged with shit like “cool headcanon.” when i said chilchuck would smoke from a fanciful contraption of a bong, that was purely conjecture, that was a headcanon. actually employing direct quotes from the text to guide a specific reading of it is not a “headcanon,” however, unless literally all analysis constitutes “headcanon” since it’s the canon that exists within your own subjectivity. but that would make it far too broad and nebulous a term to ever be useful. so let’s not kid ourselves here, and let’s refrain from conflating genuine analytical work with self-indulgent fancy. both play key roles in how fandoms and engagement with fiction operate, but there are degrees to these things, and i think those distinctions matter.

I'm sharing this post today because it mirrors frustrations I've felt about trying to articulate a difference between "a conclusion I've made that isn't explicitly canon, and may not even be intended, but can be considered an analytically sound reading about the text" and "chosing to personally believe something about a character just because it's relatable, funny, cool, sexy, etc" (and any of the in-between spaces, like OP's psych major Kabu example) in modern fandom spaces on social media. When one wants to have conversations about readings, subjective but nonetheless analytical interpretations akin to the writings of accademics regarding "serious" texts, the current connotations of the word "headcanon" feel like an outright barrier to communication. It sort of flattens everything.

Has anyone felt this frustration?

kindness-richochets: Thinking About Gender Performance via Eliot in Leverage…

This is about the TV show specifically.

cipheramnesia: I finally saw Sinners and I come down firmly on the "best movie I've seen in years," side of the experience.

whetstonefires: One thing I really like about how Murderbot relates to gender is how like–no wait, two things, in order. - this predates the show, but while it is ostensibly about the book, I believe it is more general

hardwareabstractionlayer has a post about sex puns in Nirvana in Fire names, which because it is labelled
mature
needs to be logged in to read.

They're both very well structured in a way that's easy to follow, make their points clear, make every point presented cite the canon as well as additional sources, it's just an excellent work of research and articulating of one's thoughts altogether.

I haven't seen 'meta recs' exist in the same degree other types of fanwork recs do, so I thought I'd get that ball rolling by sharing them here!
<strike>it is my understanding from seeing other's posts that posting (credited) other's meta is allowed? i can take this post down if it's not and i got confused!</strike>

On Werther, Faust and Love: an analysis of Madoka Magica through the works of Goethe is a video essay detailing all the ways the anime Madoka Magica seems to be inspired in Goethe's oeuvre, both through Madoka's plot beats and scenes mirroring those found on some of Goethe's works, as well as sharing narrative themes, primarily with his novel The Sorrows of Young Werther and his play Faust (as the title would imply). Taking these similitudes into account the author also attempts to predict the plot of the upcoming new Madoka movie, Walpurgisnacht: Rising.

And while you can enjoy it perfectly on its own, I recommend watching the author's other video essay first: "Beyond Good and Evil" - Encomium Homura (on Nietschze, Camus and love), their Homura character analysis / videoform blorbette manifesto. It lays the groundwork for the author's interpretations of Homura's psyche and her actions, both of which are discussed at lenght in the essay above.

<strike>i would have embedded both videos for easier viewing but it seems the option is disabled for them</strike>

comments

I was aware of some of these things, but not the latest stuff about AI podfics (and more than one such effort, at that).

I've also been observing community erode for some time as people either interacted on massive social media sites or else invisibly on Discord servers. The one thing both these interaction sites had in common was real-time activity. I am very used to asynchronous community and think it makes a huge difference in who can participate, because real time stuff is very time intensive and also separates people in different timezones from interacting. In the past, when people would do watch parties or live blog reactions, that was still a weekly thing. If you could catch up in a day or two you could remain in step with things.

The other commonality is the ephemeral nature of these sites. Read More

comments

txttletale does a great job of articulating what is going on in The Locked Tomb series

gaysie posits the question do u think omegaverse acknowledges covid-19 and the generation of people who permanently lost their sense of smell like how are they all scenting each other now is the omegaverse economy in shambles, and then pulls out a stack of science to argue the topic.

a varied group of people get into discussion of the thesis statement 'a feudal army marching through the countryside doesn't become any less horrific, abuse-filled and starvation-causing for the local peasantry just because they're the Good Guys' with reference to the works of JRR Tolkien, Andrej Sapowski, and George RR Martin.
Hello...

Posted by: malymin

Hi! I'm, uh... new, from the Cohost exodus. I did have a Livejournal as a kid, though. The meta-writing culture was always one of my favorite things about LJ fandom, and one of the things I've found growing anemic over the past few years on the internet. I don't feel quite "worthy" of calling my stuff "meta" (to me that implies a higher quality I don't feel I've reached) but I don't know what else it could be.

The following is a selection consisting of... one post ported over from my Cohost, and several original posts. I have no idea what's considered good enough to show to people. These are some of the posts I'm proudest of, though. I'm also not sure of the etiquette of crossposting here, so I'll just link my posts below. I don't mind whether you comment on the original page or on this one.

Yu-Gi-Oh! (Technically also Nobilis/Glitch by Jenna Moran towards the end)

"The Anime Girl, Destroyed By Creation" - regarding Nosaka Miho, a character from an anime that's subject to Damnatio memoriae by its own brand identity.

Undertale

"Undertale 9th" - regarding Asriel and Chara, and Undertale as a modern ghost story.

Vocaloid/Utau/Vocal Synthesizer Fandom

"Kasane Teto: The Mimic" - regarding Kasane Teto's origins, and how they have historically impacted her characterization in a fandom subculture where almost all source material is fanmade, and thus fanon creates canon. Not my best work even a little bit (I was very sleep deprived while writing it), but provides context for the second part.

"Kasane Teto: The Cheap Lie, the Trickster, the Underdog, the Fool" - regarding Teto's characterization in songs the fan-culture has written for her to sing since her SynthV debut. This is the one I really want to link, honestly.

doomed-spectacles, namaah-darling: I feel like I want to explain to young tumblr users who weren’t born yet that MulderxScully was a revolutionary ship. No, it was not queer but that is not the only way to be revolutionary

(If anyone has tricks on how to get a no-login link when there is a ‘keep reading’ I would appreciate knowing)

sammags: due South does a main character re-casting better than any other show on TV, and they do it by playing with television's own accepted meta-narrative.

tobermoriansass: … I am increasingly bored with the conversation around racism in fandom coming back to which characters get fic and which characters get shipped… alt link which won't demand a login - thanks to osteophage

<s>.. apologies, that second one needs to be logged in. I'll attempt to update with a better link later.</s> should be working without a login now.

ariaste Apparently there was some lil drama in Good Omens fandom again about people being deeply nervous and scared of the end of Season 3, and I wrote this in the replies of one of the asks that Neil Gaiman answered, but I feel like it is deserving of being crossposted into its own post (in a slightly expanded form) so folks actually see it.

wrangletangle Yes, you can tag your dark or triggery work on AO3 with the characters and ships that are in it - from 2016

a mixed group talk about The Hunger Games, Actual Teen style! - goes into some interesting comparison of what the books talk about vs the way the movie sanitises the text.

they-bite - part of the fun of the original alien is the horror of the nostromo itself imo with response by pyreo (the notes imply the post is inaccurate; I don’t have the ability to interpret that)

multiple authors on why Lovecraft now appeals specifically to the marginalized people he hated?

fuckyeahpostingshiton sent an ask to frociaggine: I had this revelation that New Rho Could be short for “New Rhodesia” which would say a LOT about the original colonists of the planet (the trillionaires(?))

jessiethewitchzard, dailyadventureprompts, and vaspider in conversation about the idea that there are actually multiple completely distinct activities both being referred to as "playing D&D”

I'm not always 100% sure, so have been erring on 'not being confusing'

cryptotheism made a short comment:re Aslan being Christ, maniculum discusses a bit about why a lion?

thespianwordnerd: The key to understanding Leonard McCoy is that he only ACTS like he hates everyone and everything

mikkeneko: That post about Marcille and Laios' relationship actually got me thinking about Chilchuck and Laios' relationship.

poorquentyn - It puzzles me when people cite LOTR as the standard of “simple” or “predictable” or “black and white” fantasy

grammarpedant: Rereading The Raven Tower, I see now where I didn't before why it bothers me so much when characters who are nonbinary, agender or otherwise don't fit into any human gender schema get called "technically cis,”even as a joke, for not being interested in changing their body or gender presentation to fit human norms. and i suppose the reason i didn't realize earlier is because it's a more clearly intersex experience, though it obviously has strong overlap with the trans experience.

nunyabznsbabes - Katniss is like Lucy Gray this, Katniss is like Sejanus that, and yes find that's all good and true and lovely but Katniss Everdeen is also a direct parallel to Coriolanus Snow and people NEED to start talking about this because it's driving me crazy.
